JULIANNA

Paying Homage to the Masters…As a young child Julianna was called to be a painter. One of her fondest memories was the fine scent of linseed oil that invited her each night to visit her grandmother’s art studio. Growing up, the young horse lover not only raised and broke Mustang horses but used them as models for her drawing and painting. Her passion and talent led her to the prestigious and world-renowned Art Center in Pasadena, CA. During her studies at Art Center, she relished in figure drawing and anatomy classes as well as studying the Masters. She went on to study and obtain her MFA, her emphasis being the continued understanding of the figure as well as historical painting techniques. She continues to pass on this love to those seeking a way to connect with the brilliance of the masters of the past. As she completed her graduation with honors, she also became a “Madonnara”, a traditional street performance artist whose origins date back to the 15th century. Julianna will typically create a 14” by 14’ foot depiction of an iconic image such as those featured in Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel. Achieving both national and international recognition, she has traveled and “performed” in Italy, Holland, Turkey, India, Spain, Austria and other countries. Visiting these artistically historical parts of the world has allowed Julianna to understand the cultural milieu in which the Masters lived and to study their works directly. Julianna is the quintessential Renaissance woman in that her work is a creative blending of the classical and the contemporary. There is a mystery to her creations as she combines old and new. She effectively utilizes acrylic paints, traditional oils, raw pigments and varnish techniques dating back 500 years. To achieve her effects, she integrates old recipes and new materials while applying the traditional masters’ techniques of painting in layers and blending with color glazes. Her work has been directly inspired by Rubens, Caravaggio and Michelangelo. Although her work has been compared to many of her contemporaries, Julianna’s art is a conscious and unique integration of the Neo-Classical and the Baroque periods. From the Classical, she draws upon the ability to see perfection and portray that idealized beauty in her figures. From the Baroque period, she is inspired by the emotion, drama and essence of light to be found in so many of the works. Integrating these two periods allows her to express her own personal point of view. Julianna is an internationally recognized “Madonnara” and Neo-Classical Baroque painter.
